Match

Process: Preparation -          Make enough copies of a worksheet (or Activity Book page) so each group of 3-4 Ss can have one. -          Cut the worksheets up so that each question or answer is on a single slip of paper. Model -          Divide students into groups of 3-4. -          Show/Write a sentence card on the board. E.g. “I am a triangle.” Ask students to read it. -          Show a picture of a circle and place it next to the sentence. “Is this correct?” (No) -          Repeat with other shapes. Show a picture of a triangle. “Is this correct?” (Yes) Task -          Distribute question sets to each group and ask them to match. -          Circulate and assist, asking Ss to read the sentences aloud or pointing to various shapes for spoken practice. -          Check answers verbally within groups or as a class.

Benefits: This is a fun and interactive way of completing a worksheet. It encourages students to work together and makes worksheets more physical.

Anticipated Problems: It is a good idea to mix the groups up to include strong and weak students in the same group. This way, the stronger students can help peer-teach their classmates. It also evens out the competition between groups.

Find Your Partner

Process:Preparation -          Make enough copies of the work sheet so that when you cut out the 3 parts of each question, there are enough strips that each student has one. Model -          Show/Write a sentence card on the board. E.g. “My father wears a _____ with his shirt.” Ask students to read it. -          Show a picture of a dress and place it next to the sentence. “Is this correct?” (No) -          Repeat with other pictures. Show a picture of a necktie. “Is this correct?” (Yes) -          Repeat procedure with word cards. -          Call 5 volunteers to the front of the class. Give each student an A4 sample of a question part. (E.g. My father wears a ____ with his shirt. / necktie / picture of a necktie / picture of a CD / dress.) -          Volunteers say what their cards are. Ask Ss which do not belong. Task -          Distribute question slips to students. “Find your partners.” -          Circulate and assist as necessary. If students are showing each other their cards instead of speaking English, remind them to use English.

Benefits: This activity gives students the opportunity to get out of their chairs and to increase the energy level of the classroom. In order to answer the questions, students must communicate with each other to share their question, picture, or word. On the surface, it seems as though the multiple choice aspect of the questions has been eliminated. (Originally, each question had four possible answers A-D.) However, since all four answers from the different questions are mixed together, students must still choose between the different possible answers.

Extension: This activity can also be used to put students into groups randomly. When students have found their partners, they are instructed to sit and work together for the next activity. For large groups, Teachers can print the worksheet out on different coloured paper prior to cutting. This way, students must not only find their partners based on the questions and answers, but also according to the colour of their paper.
